Welcome to Flavortown!

Sonia Mathur, Class of 2028

In the wise words of Guy Fieri, “welcome to Flavortown!” Dental school can be tough, but that does not mean it has to be boring. One of my favorite ways to decompress after a test (@ head and neck) or on the weekend is trying new restaurants with friends! This pulp exposure serves as your guide to good food spots around ASDOH at different price points.

1. SALT Tacos Y Tequila

If you are a fan of tacos and margaritas, this is the place for you. Located 14 minutes from the ASDOH campus is SALT Tacos Y Tequila, a lively restaurant located in SanTan Village. Start out your experience with homemade chips and salsa, and pick from a wide range of interesting alcoholic or non-alcoholic margaritas such as raspberry hibiscus, mango caliente, and my personal favorite, prickly pear. Their tacos are phenomenal, and it is a place you will certainly want to come back too! After enjoying your meal, walk off the food coma in SanTan Village mall which contains a range of different local and commercial shops.

2. Shaghf Cafe

If you want to get away from Mesa for a bit, head over to Shaghf Cafe, an Arab coffee shop 21 minutes away from ASDOH in Tempe. Experience wonderful Arab coffee culture as you study in their beautifully designed lounge. You can even try the viral Dubai chocolate bar, though you may have to wait a bit to get your hands on it! They have a wide range of unique coffees and non-caffeinated beverages such as Date coffee, Turkish coffee, and peach tea.

3. Prep and Pastry

If you are looking for a charming brunch spot with delicious sweet and savory options, look no further. Prep and Pastry, located 15 minutes away from campus in northern Gilbert, is the place for you. Pick from omelets, avocado toast, specialty french toast, and breakfast sandwiches, and make sure to try out their pastries, of which they are known for.

4. Mensho Ramen

You can't go wrong with a comforting bowl of ramen, and this restaurant will not disappoint. At a little bit higher of a price point, Mensho Ramen is a newly opened michelin star restaurant located 22 minutes away from the ASDOH campus. They serve a unique menu of sushi, ramen, and more, and try out their delicious appetizers including corn wings and takoyaki. Be prepared to wait to get a table!

5. DABOBA

A good food recommendation list would not be complete without at least one boba spot! DABOBA is a cute shop located 16 minutes away from ASDOH in Gilbert. Whether you go there to study or just to sit and chat, you will be pleased with the friendly service and great drinks. Pick from a wide range of options including the classics like brown sugar milk tea and thai tea. If you want to try something different, try out their unique drinks including their strawberry yogurt and cheese foam beverages.

Hopefully, you will be able to check out some of these great restaurants and continue to explore the great food options and community around campus!
